With more than 80% expatriate population from 200 different Nationalities, Dubai is indeed a large melting pot of diverse cultures. In a thriving international community like Dubai, there are several families and students who speak more than one language, which is why there is growing demand for a multilingual education system. Considering the cultural and linguistic diversity of the region, a new school is opening in Dubai, with an aim to offer multilingual education that can equip children with the language and skills required to become global citizens and world leaders of tomorrow.
The Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai (SISD) is Dubai’s first ever private school to offer multilingual education in French, German, English and Arabic. Set to open its doors in September 2015, within the Dubai Healthcare City’s phase 2 developments, the school has already caught the attention of several parents, receiving over 100 applications for the academic year 2015-16 in just four weeks!
Head of School, Beat Sommer commented that the school had been overwhelmed by the number of enrolments to date, “We are simply delighted by the overwhelming level of interest in multilingual tuition. It’s clear to us that an increasing number of parents in the UAE see the true benefit in multilingual education. Our goal is to foster a flourishing community of global citizens that are inquisitive, active and compassionate life-long learners, and who contribute to a more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
Curriculum and languages offered
Students of SISD will enjoy a multi-lingual education through the highly reputed Swiss-founded International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum program including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP):
Students will learn in three bilingual sections with
English with Arabic and other foreign languages on offer.
During the Kindergarten phase, all students will be taught almost entirely in English. Through songs, games and sports they will begin to acquire some oral competency in French or German plus Arabic depending on the section of the school that they have joined, however, this will be the minority of their time in school. From Grade 1 onwards, students in the bilingual sections will be immersed in a progressive environment where they will study 50% of their time in English and 50% in either French or German. Students in these sections will be able to qualify for the IB Bilingual Diploma during their final years at the school.
